Wine
What makes Santorini wines special is their age - many are more than 100 years old . Boutari built a new winery here in 1988 and helped revive the wine trade which is now strong and healthy.Santorini is famed for its white wine, too sweet for some tastes. The island also produces fava beans and very small tasty tomatoes which are made into tomato paste. It is also noted for its 'chloro' goat's milk chesses and for pumice stone which is abundant.
Transport
The bus service of the island is very good, with buses running to 4am , being frequent and punctual. In summer they leave Thira central station every 30mins for Oia, Monolithos, Kamari and Perissa and Roads are generally good and though the island is small it is very hilly,so you will need a car if you want to explore them . Taxis are in shorter supply in the island but be aware that the central taxi station is in Thira next to the bus central station. There is also a radio taxi service (tel: 2860 22555).
Language
Greek is the island ’s language , however the majority of the locals speak English, German, Italian or French. Also you will find that English is spoken to all major resorts and the locals are particularly friendly and communicative.
Weather
The island has warm Mediterranean climate. From November to March you will find that it is the most rainy period.Winters are mild in the South but much cooler in the North but the best time to visit the island is with no doubt the summer months.
Transport
The transport system of the area is very organised and has as well undoubtedly good road network,and as a result driving won’t be a problem in the area.When it comes to choosing a taxi for your transfers you must know that rates are reasonable and based on a Km basis.
Therefore there is an extra charge on journeys from and to airports, ports, stations.
If you decide to hire a car you must be aware that a national driving licence is acceptable for EU nationals. |
